Aluminium pergolas with a roof of adjustable louvres: you tilt them for shade, to let the light in or to ventilate, and they close watertight when it rains. We make them to measure and install them in El Puerto de Santa María and across the province of Cádiz.
Short answer: a bioclimatic pergola is an aluminium structure with a roof of adjustable louvres that you tilt, by hand crank or by motor, to control sun, ventilation and rain. Open, they let air and light through; closed, they form a watertight roof that carries the water along gutters to the posts. Of all pergolas, it gives you the most control over the climate on your terrace.
The roof is made up of aluminium louvres that rotate on their own axis. Depending on how you position them, the pergola does a different job:
With a motor, you move the louvres with a remote control or from your phone. With a rain sensor they close by themselves when it starts to rain, and with a wind sensor they open when the wind blows hard, which is the position manufacturers usually recommend to put less strain on the structure.
A bioclimatic pergola can be attached to the house, resting against the façade on one side, which is the usual choice for porches and for terraces on villas and penthouses. Or it can be freestanding (self-supporting), on its own posts, to cover part of the garden, the pool or a restaurant terrace. A freestanding pergola needs a little more structure, so it usually costs a bit more.
Either way, it is made to the exact measurements of the space and the aluminium is powder-coated in the colour that best suits your façade.

Dimmable light strips built into the louvres or around the edge, for dinners and summer nights.
With glass curtains the pergola is closed off against wind and cold; with screen awnings you block the low afternoon sun.
Heaters under the pergola to extend the season into cool evenings, at home or on your business's terrace.

The louvres cover the top; to get a space sheltered from wind and cold, you need to enclose the sides. With frameless glass curtains, the bioclimatic pergola becomes an outdoor living room: curtains open in summer, closed when the levante blows or the weather turns cool, and louvres open on sunny days to let the warmth in.
See glass curtainsAs a guide, a bioclimatic pergola costs between €350 and €500/m² with manual louvres and between €450 and €750/m² motorised. With sensors, LED lighting and side enclosures it can exceed €1,000/m². These are 2026 market ranges with installation included; VAT and extras are always itemised in your quote.

On the Cádiz coast a pergola has to withstand three things: the summer sun, the levante and the salt air. That is why we use powder-coated aluminium treated for marine environments, motors protected against damp and gutters sized for heavy autumn rain. In very windy spots, such as porches open to the sea or penthouses, we reinforce the anchoring and recommend the wind sensor and side enclosures. We go into this in more detail in our guide to protecting your terrace from the levante.
We install bioclimatic pergolas in El Puerto de Santa María, Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, Chiclana, Puerto Real, San Fernando, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Rota and Chipiona as well as the rest of the province. We also fit them on bar and restaurant terraces, where the pergola is usually fitted with LED lighting and heaters.
It all starts with a free site visit: we measure up, look at the orientation and how the wind comes in, and suggest the pergola and enclosures that make sense for your terrace, with a fixed, itemised quote.
As a guide, a bioclimatic pergola costs between €350 and €500/m² with manual louvres, between €450 and €750/m² motorised, and between €700 and €1,100/m² with sensors, LED lighting and side enclosures, with installation included. A motorised pergola measuring 3 x 4 m comes to between €5,400 and €9,000. The exact price depends on the measurements, on whether it is attached or freestanding, and on the extras; the site visit, measuring and quote are free. You'll find more detail in our guide prices.
Yes. By enclosing the sides with frameless glass curtains, the bioclimatic pergola becomes a space sheltered from wind and rain, and on sunny days you simply open the louvres to let in light and warmth. It is the combination that comes closest to gaining an extra room. If one side faces west, a screen awning blocks the low afternoon sun.
In strong wind, the advice is to leave the louvres open, as manufacturers recommend, so that the air passes between them and the structure is under less strain; with a wind sensor, the pergola does this by itself. To stop the levante coming in at the sides, the most effective solution is to close off the exposed sides with glass curtains or with screens running in side tracks. We explain this in our guide to protecting your terrace from the levante.
A bioclimatic pergola controls the sun by tilting its aluminium louvres, which are opaque, and lets hot air escape between them. The retractable roof slides open or closed along tracks and its roofing is usually polycarbonate or glass, so it lets light through even when it is closed. If you want shade and ventilation, the bioclimatic pergola is the better fit; if you want natural light with the terrace covered, go for the retractable roof.
Very little: clear leaves and dust from the louvres and gutters a couple of times a year, rinse off the salt with water more often if the house is right on the seafront, and have the motor checked from time to time. Powder-coated aluminium does not corrode; over the years, the parts that need most attention are the motor and the electronics, which can be serviced or replaced.
You usually need at least a notification or a declaración responsable (a self-declaration) to the town hall and, in some municipalities, a minor works licence (licencia de obra menor). If the pergola is going on a building, on a penthouse for example, you also need the approval of the residents' association. We advise you on the procedure in your municipality and give you the technical description that councils usually ask for.
